Building Information Modelling

The Queensland State Government has set a direction for Building Information Modelling (BIM) implementation in successive State Infrastructure Strategy documents to enable "digital by default", including the implementation of BIM progressively into all major state infrastructure projects.

The department's implementation strategy is a four-pronged approach focusing on understanding the asset requirements the department needs to capture, developing the underpinning BIM documentation and standards, internal and external capability development aligned to the BIM documentation, and supported by robust ICT software applications all working together in a Common Data Environment (CDE).

BIM for Transport and Main Roads Guideline

The BIM for Transport and Main Roads Guideline provides an overview of the department's plan for the implementation of BIM processes and methodology in the delivery of road infrastructure projects.

The BIM for Transport and Main Roads Guideline has been updated to:

  • provide clarity for procurement of BIM in different contract types
  • introduce a TMR preferred BIM file naming convention
  • include modifications to the Element Attribute Tables to reflect feedback from industry, and
  • introduce a unique object code naming convention for road objects.

BIM Exchange Information Requirements (EIR)

The department’s Building Information Modelling Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) provides clarity to the department’s project managers and others involved in the creation of contract documentation that supports the project delivery process where BIM is included in the contract.

The EIR also provides clear BIM contract deliverables that industry must respond to when developing their BIM Execution Plans in response to the EIR.

BIM Execution Plan (BEP) Template

The BIM Execution Plan (BEP) is a formal document that is submitted by the proponents during a tender process, outlining how they intend to meet the BIM requirements defined in the department’s Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) and associated contract documents.

The BEP template will give guidance to the department’s project tender evaluation teams, project managers and others involved in the evaluation of the BEP submissions as part of the QTRIP delivery process where BIM is included in the contract.

The BEP template also provides guidance to our industry partners in design and construction on how they need to respond to each section of the EIR and associated contract documents.

Industry partners shall use the department's BEP template in developing their BEPs.

BIM for Bridges

The bridge BIM model shall encompass the structural design of the bridge asset, in a complete three dimensional (3D) electronic model. The model is progressively developed through the asset's lifecycle. It includes project attributes, and is suitable for construction coordination and field set out.

The BIM for Bridges Manual provides guidance to any entity engaged in the design development, construction and presentation of
as constructed information of departmental bridges.

Transport and Main Roads Object Attributes for Bridges

To align with the requirements of the BIM for Bridges Manual, the Transport and Main Roads object attributes for bridges provide definition for attribute requirements of Transport and Main Roads Bridges. Attribute definitions have been provided for all phases of the Bridge BIM lifecycle.

Software

The BIM model object attributes for Bridges are hosted as shared parameters in the Revit Project file in the Transport and Main Roads Revit to IFC export pack.
